The dog became alarmed and attacked the child when the mother coughed. Though the parents rushed the infant to the hospital, nothing could be done to save the newborn, according to the San Diego Union-Tribune. Area authorities are investigating, but have not found evidence that suggests the incident was anything other than an a very distressing accident. KFMB reports the dog is now being held in quarantine while officials try to determine whether or not the 2-year-old canine is infected with rabies. After that period ends, the animal’s fate will be up to the family. If they opt to not claim or advocate for the dog, he will be put down.
