Italy topped their group – level on points with Belgium – who they stuffed in the opening round of matches 2-0. At that point, everyone thought the Azzurri would be real contenders. But a surprise 1-0 defeat to Ireland in week three has revealed chinks in their defensive armour. Spain finished second behind Croatia after a 2-1 loss to the Croats in the final round of games. It means both Italy and Spain go into this last 16 clash on a loss.
