A baby girl with her intestines outside the body in a remote village in Bajura district of far-western Nepal. 24-year-old Binita Sunuwar, a resident of Simalkot of Barhabisa-9, delivered the baby with the rare birth defect at the Barhabisa Health Post on Monday morning, according to Health Assistant Sharada Singh.Though Binita visited the local health post for regular checkup during pregnancy, the defect could not be detected as ultrasound facility was not available there, Auxiliary Nurse Midwife Laxmi Giri said. The woman suffers from anaemia and is very weak. It is her second baby. The chief of Bajura District Hospital, Dr Mohan Nath, informed that the baby can be saved if she could be taken to the Kathmandu-based Kanti Children’s Hospital for treatment. Sameer Sunar, father of the newborn, grieved that he, however, did not have money to take the baby and the mother to Kathmandu. “She used to complain of abdominal pain during pregnancy. I could not afford to take her outside the village for checkup. Now, the baby is born in this condition,” he said.
